The Cave of the Lakes

This cave is really a mystery. Meet the "Cave of the Lakes" in Achaia. Explore the legendary "Cave of the Lakes" in the village of Kastriá of Achaia, only 17 km from Kalavryta. Wander around its mysterious galleries and multicolor chambers, and admire impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. What makes this cave quite unique is an unusual formation of cascading lakes that form three different levels in its mouth! The cave's explored length is 1,980 meters. Enter the cave through an artificial tunnel that leads you directly to the second floor, whose sight is truly awe-inspiring. Human fossils, as well as fossils of a variety of animals (among which a hippopotamus), were found at the cave's lower floor. During winter time, when the snow melts, the cave is transformed into a subterranean river with natural waterfalls. In the summer, part of the cave dries up revealing stone basins and dams up to 4m in height. The 13 lakes inside the cave retain the rest of the water. Try to cross the small suspension bridges that will take you from lake to lake.

The Vouraikos Gorge

The gorge starts at around 3 kilometers to the south of the village of Kato Zachlorou and extends between Diakofto and Kalavryta. Many streams enter Vouraikos River at various places and create numerous waterfalls in the process. The width of the gorge varies at different places. The gorge is highly important for the natural habitat of the region and has a variety of flora and fauna. There are numerous waterfalls and forests that line this gorge and make a hike through it. The gorge also allows you to drive alongside its steep cliffs and near-vertical drops, on the Diakofto-Kalavryta road.

The Monastery of Mega Spileo

According to a lot of people, it is the oldest Monastery of Greece and one of the most impressive Christian Orthodox pilgrimages. It is 10kms out of the town of Kalavrita. It took its name (Spileo = cave) from the cave where the icon of Virgin Mary was found. The Monastery of Mega Spileo makes people admire it as it is built in the shade of a steep rock on Helmos Mountain. It suits perfectly with the wild and impressive landscape of that region, as it is built at an elevation of 940m. This eight-floor Monastery that is situated on the rocks captures even the most indifferent visitor. It is 10kms away from Kalavrita. You can visit it either by car or on foot, through the path of Zachlorou.

The forest of Strofilia

The biggest pine forest in Greece, with trees shaped like large umbrellas that protect you. Passing 45km from Patra, you meet a great ecosystem that covers a range of 22.000 acres and is protected by the Ramsar convention.  With rich fauna and flora, the Strofilia forest is a rare biotope of grand interest ideal for pleasant picnics and a place for exploration for our hiking and nature-loving friends. Caution during the afternoon, however, since at that time mosquitoes lurk.  Organize a visit to the forest and enjoy what nature so generously offers.

The Rack Railway "Odontotos"

About 120 years ago Odontotos rack railway started from the seaside town of Diakopto parallel to the river and climbed to Kalavrita through bridges and tunnels. Since then the Vouraikos river and Odontotos go together. The little train incorporated so well to the natural environment that it seems that it had always been there. The way it was constructed did not put a strain on the ecosystem of the gorge. Using stone and wood from the area the technicians' work is so perfect that someone may think that nature worked on its own. Odontotos is not just a train. Vouraikos gorge and Odontotos rack railway Diakopto – Kalavrita is a unique attraction in Greece. An area full of towns, villages, hospitable inhabitants, unique environment and the scent of Greek life. In order to write the history of this place, we need volumes of books but a trip on the train will give you a real taste.
