Νafpaktos is a coastal town in Western Greece. Although it is one of the most picturesque places in the Mainland, it is not so widely known to foreign tourists.

It is also a popular weekend destination due to its proximity to Athens, only 200 km away. What makes Nafpaktos so unique is that it combines the sea with the mountain and the fact that it’s an all year round destination.

Highlights:

  • Eyecatching sight
  • Venetian Castle
  • Cervantes Statue
  • Tower of Botsaris
  • Church of Prophet Ilias
  • Fethiye Mosque
  • Oreini Nafpaktia

The Venetian Castle

Built on the top of the hill the castle has some of the largest and most well-preserved fortifications in Greece.  It was made during many construction phases from the antiquity until the Ottoman period. The view from up there is breathtaking as you can see the famous Rio-Antirio bridge and the Venetian Harbor.

Cervantes Statue

Explore in and around the fortification of the harbor and you’ll also bump into the Statue of Cervantes. Miquel de  Cervantes, one of the greatest Spanish writers and author of Don Quixote, fought in the Battle of Lepanto here and lost his left hand.

Tower of Botsaris

The Botsaris Museum is part of the Venetian Tower of Botsaris. It is a historic landmark that is run by the charitable Botsaris Foundation. It is worth a stop to view a collection of replica paintings and engravings that give insight into the great Battle of Lepanto of 1571.

Church of Prophet Ilias

Look out for the small church of Prophet Ilias. There are also the remains of a Turkish mosque and Turkish baths.

Fethiye Mosque

This Ottoman mosque of Nafpaktos is located on the eastern jetty of the Venetian port. It was built right after the conquest of the city by Sultan Beyazid II Veli between 1481 and 1512. Its name means "the mosque of the conquest".  Open during exhibitions.

Oreini Nafpaktia

Less than an hour away by car and you will find yourself surrounded by a forest, an incredible mountainous scenery with small streams and waterfalls along with picturesque villages.

Nafpaktos is a surprisingly beautiful destination more like a hidden gem. A place with historical interest, and natural beauty.
